After Jaguar and Land Rover now it’s the time for Hummer, GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner have recently revealed to its shareholders that Hummer is under a strategic review and automaker is reviewing all possible options from revamping the
brand on one end to selling it (partially or fully) at the other extreme. Probable reasons for such a decision are rising fuel prices, fall in volumes and changing consumer behaviour, who look for more fuel efficient cars (according to estimates, H3 runs 15 miles per gallon and H2 covers only 12 miles per gallon).
Hummer has always been a niche brand (an off road vehicle) and was originally built by AM General Corporation in 1992 (earlier versions of Hummer were available to military and first civilian version was rolled out of plant in 1992 and the brand icon "Hummer" was born). AM General Corporation owned the brand fully until the marketing rights were sold to General Motors in 1999.
Currently Hummer vehicles are sold through a network of 300 dealers in 34 countries (Hummer have similar advantage of fully established networked as for Jaguar and Land Rover and played the decisive role in deal to happen). In 2006 Hummer’s volume crossed 70,000 mark in US alone, this year niche segment of Hummer is disappearing. Where small car market in U.S. has grown in leaps and bounds, truck and SUV market is shrinking and this is evident by falling volumes of Hummer and other major brands.
Although none of the potential buyers are disclosed as of now, speculations are high that it could be from India or China.
Is it Tata Motors again who have clearly indicated that its still not over and they lookout for more acquisitions and alliances or this time its Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Indian Utility vehicle major who missed in case of Jaguar and Land Rover or it would be some other name from China?
