Fuel prices are soaring, burden is quite evident on pocket and nothing can be done, still if we follow some simple steps, we can offset atleast some effect of fuel price hike.
1) Take care of your vehicle – Well maintained vehicle, helps you keeping running cost at minimum.
a) Damaged fuel plug / injection system reduces fuel efficiency by 30%.
b) Improper tire pressure reduces fuel efficiency by 10%.
2) Drive your vehicle at normal and constant speed – Over speeding leads to
a) Increased overall usage of brake and clutch pedals
b) More consumption of fuel in engine compartments thus reduces fuel efficiency.
3) If possible use the system of car pooling / public transport system –
a) Any system of this kind could be cost effective
b) Helps reducing congestion and traffic jams at streets.
4) Use Credit cards to fill fuel – Credit card companies offer reward points on the purchase of fuel (via credit cards), use the facility to accumulate points and use these points whenever required.
5) Avoid unnecessary usage of vehicle –
a) Planning to visit nearby shop or friend in neighborhood, take some walk.
b) At red-light or in traffic jam switch your vehicle off (According to estimates it takes less fuel to restart engine than used in 10 seconds of idling)
6) Alternate fuels – If you have a system of alternate fuels (like CNG), use them.
All above factors will not only help you save some money but also reward you with good health in bonus and this could be your contribution towards controlling Global Warming.

Well the ideas given are good...let me add some more.....
1. Do change the gears at the prescribed speed limits and maintain the speed range in every gear. It gives excellent fuel efficeincy, also there is no knocking or jerking while changing the gears.
2. Keep your car cool. Park it in a shade. It saves your A/c power consumption, fuel consumption, and engire excertion.
3. Just don't go for agressive driving. It will burn more fuel and also your blood.
4. There are many .... keep posting...
