Soaring fuel price have posed serious threat to most of the economies and forced gove
rnments to come out of their comfort zones and experiment with some real measures.
Indian government’s effort to launch a system of "Fuel economy ratings for passenger cars" by the end of 2008 is first of its kind venture, in which cars will be assigned star-rating according to fuel efficiency.
System enables customer to know (while buying) exactly what mileage to expect from the new car and how it stacks up with other models in its class.
Initially carmakers will be invited voluntarily and get their models labelled on a scale of one to five stars and later by 2011-12, the fuel efficiency norms will be made mandatory for all passenger vehicles.

Indian government had recently succeeded in implementing similar system for Air conditioners and Refrigerators sold in the country, which are rated on parameter of power consumption.

Idea seems to be great and help customer in making more informed choice while making a purchase, along with helping the country in saving fuel in the range of 5 – 15 million tonnes by 2030 (according to estimates).
To implement the system, cars have been divided into eight weight categories and for each category, best performer will be given five stars while the worst performers will be given one star. Performance bars will be raised at appropriate time intervals and Carmakers have to ensure, that they meet fuel efficiency norms (along with stringent emission norms).
For non-petrol vehicles which use Diesel, LPG or CNG, values will be converted to petrol equivalent fuel consumption per litre. For vehicles having multiple fuel intake, fuel consumption will be calculated separately for each fuel type and the lower fuel consumption value will be used for labelling.
State seems to be really serious on the matter and intends to push all manufacturers to get their models labelled starting 2008-end.Data about all the vehicles ratings will be published on portals, to help consumers compare figures even before they hit the showrooms.
